The Truth About Detoxing

There are an abundant amount of ads that provide information about detox teas and juice cleanses which promise to clean or flush out the harmful toxins from your human body. These detox products have become a booming trend in health and they are almost everywhere promising many different things like weight loss, clear skin, better mood, or improved energy. Although these products sound appealing, the real truth is that the human body does not need any extra products to detoxify. In fact, the human body has a fantastic set of systems that work 24/7 to naturally remove toxins.

Every single day, many systems work together to remove waste from the body. For example, the liver breaks down harmful substances and filters the substances from your blood, the kidneys work around the clock to remove waste in the body through urine, the lungs expel carbon dioxide while breathing, skin sweats out waste, and the digestive system eliminates everything your body does not need. Together, these body systems create a natural way to flush out harmful toxins from the body. It truly surpasses the effects of any quick fix detox product.

So truly, why does this medical myth about detoxifying exist? Many of the products out there promise many different things to consumers such as weight loss or glowing skin. Although, initially, changes are evident, they are usually the result of random water loss or digestive effects, not actual long-term change. Additionally, sometimes, these products can be harmful to the human body as they can cause various problems such as dehydration, electrolyte issues, and even digestive problems. The appeal of a quick fix might be captivating, but it can come with the expense of your health.

Instead of using these products, you can do many things to support the body’s natural systems for detoxing. For the kidneys, staying extremely hydrated will help them filter waste into urine more efficiently. Other general things include eating a well balanced diet, regular exercise, and getting enough sleep. These practices will allow your organs to function properly, help your body spread nutrients throughout the blood, and jump start detoxification processes.  These habits are sustainable and they are far more effective than an idea like a 13 day juice cleanse.

Debunking medical myths such as detoxifying correctly aligns with our mission as Aware Together to provide accurate information about health so people make informed decisions. The takeaway is extremely simple and clear. If you trust your body’s built in systems and focus on sustainable habits rather than a quick fix solution that promises way more than they deliver, your body will feel the difference.
